There are three reasons why churches enter summer behind budget. If you are behind budget the chances are you are guilty of one or more. Here is why most churches are behind.
1. Bad planning to begin with. This one won’t make you love me but sadly it is all too often true. Let me explain. First, many churches set an overly optimistic increase in their budget planning. I know weather hurt you this year but then why did you not plan for that especially if you live in the snow belt? What happens is to make the new yearly budget churches have to have all the pieces fall in the right place. Life happens and before you know it you are behind budget.
Churches often doom their summer far before summer begins!
2. Hopeful negligence. Churches hope next week, next month or next quarter will be better. Hope is not a strategy. The first month you fell behind was the time to act. Sadly most churches either hope for a turnaround or simply are not paying attention to the furthering gap towards meeting budget. Then before you know it you look up and you are more than one week behind.
Churches fail to fund their summer budget because they simply are not paying attention to the facts.
3. No plan to recover. All the while that giving is failing to meet the budget church leaders plan for the summer. Meetings are held. Material is ordered. All plans are in action except the one thing needed to bring in the dollars. A plan. As a result many of the mission and ministry initiatives are threatened at the very moment they are set to launch.
Churches that fail to plan are planning to fail when it comes to making budget.
