Yesterday I responded to a church telling them in essence they were not the kind of church I pray for as a stewardship partner. This is the second time I have said this to the same church. The last time a couple on the committee said I was obnoxious. I was surprised when three years later they again wanted me to submit a Request For Proposal something we just don’t do. Why? Because when you send an RFP all you get back is cut and paste answers from companies. We are not interested in programs but in partnerships that lead to increased giving.
This morning during my wife and I’s prayer time she prayed a prayer for me that nailed it! She prayed that God would send to me churches that NEEDED and WANTED my help. That is it!
I am praying for those churches that have arrived at that point where they know they need help. As giving to the church declines few churches realize the need to do something! I stand in amazement at how many times I talk with Christian leaders who are ignorant of the giving trends around them. If you don’t know you need help I cannot help you. If you are unwilling to be helped do us all a favor and hit the back button of your browser.
Is that obnoxious? Yes, if you think you are above help! What is interesting is I help some of the largest churches in America that have a wealth of talent to pull from. Yet these foresighted leaders know that with the challenges of today’s decline in giving it pays to get help!
I am praying for churches that WANT my help. The pastor of the church that reached out for an RFP wanted to use me last time. He wants to use me this time. However the committee wants to shop around and look at other firms including mine. Frankly I don’t have the time to waste on a dog and pony show. I need clients that WANT my help. Those are the kinds of clients that are fun to work with and they are the kind that get results.
If you follow my advice I will help you increase giving. However you have to WANT my help.
Is that obnoxious? Yes, if think all stewardship firms and all consultants are alike. I have helped churches from large to small increase giving and I can help you. Before I can help you though you have to WANT my help.
