If you want to know how to have all the money you need just don’t dream big! My church is reading through Mark Batterson’s book “Draw the Circle.” I am also reading through the book this prayer challenge is based upon, “The Circle Maker.” This morning I was reading his chapter goals and it caused me to think about churches and giving. Here is my observation…
Every church that has a vision has a giving need. The only churches that I know of that don’t need money are the ones that don’t have a vision or dream! Why would they need money? Yet churches that dream big and have big visions always need more money!
The Common Denominator for every visionary church is the need for funding that vision. I was blessed to be able to help Joel Osteen with his dream of a larger facility in Houston to reach more people. You know what he needed? More money! $100 million more! Yet the next week I fly into West Virginia to a church that had just crossed the 200 attendance barrier and that pastor had the same problem as Joel, he needed more money!
Mark Batterson in his book tells many stories about the church he planted in the Washington D.C. area. If you know anything about that area you know how expensive property is. He tells many stories of God’s provision when they needed money. Let me share with you a few key quotes that have blessed me…
“We refuse to let our budget determine our vision.”
“Faith is allowing your God-given vision to determine your budget.”
“Work like it depends upon you and pray like it depends upon God.”
Here is my take as it pertains to giving, To increase your giving you need to work like it depends upon you and pray like it depends upon God.
The reality is too many churches do nothing expecting money to simply flow in. If you continue to do what you have always done don’t be surprised when you don’t get what you always got! That is perhaps poor grammar but it is true!
Excuses I hear about not having a plan to increase giving…
I don’t know what to do! What if someone did the work for you? I do that every week for my members.
